Learning, Living, and Linking Adults with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities In January 2014, a unique "life college" is opening in Somerville, MA, aimed at empowering adults with autism and other developmental disabilities to lead meaningful, gratifying, healthy and connected lives, while easing their loved ones of worry and isolation. At the 3LPlace life college, young adults will work at their own pace to develop the skills and confidence needed to move from the shelter of home and schools into the community. The highly individualized residential transition program will offer learning from 7:30 am to 10:30 pm, seven days a week, 11 months a year. 3LPlace's vision is that a successful transition to adulthood begins with a thorough understanding of each individual, particularly about their interests and passions in life. We believe that those unique interests can be harnessed to accelerate the development of self-direction, independence skills, and social behavior. |

45 Bartlett Crescent Brookline, MA 02446 617 277-1805 [email protected] www.specializedhousing.org Summary PROMOTING INDEPENDENCE THROUGH HOME OWNERSHIP Specialized Housing offers flexible consultation, development and management services, tailoring services to particular groups of families, depending on their location, their interests, and their specific needs. Fees depend upon the scope of the project. Specialized Housing creates supportive independent living arrangements for adults with learning, developmental or autism spectrum disabilities. For more than 30 years, Specialized Housing has been working with families to develop condominiums and provide ongoing management services. Specialized Housing provides the oversight and all the staff that make this happen. The condominiums are owned by the resident or owned by the family on his or her behalf. The residents learn to be homeowners and become part of a profoundly supportive community, forming deep friendships and helping each other. The condominiums are owned by the resident or owned by the family on his or her behalf. Residents and families have a significant role in the ongoing operations of the household. Some families consider this an investment in their child’s future security and an opportunity to have some control over their own lives. Specialized Housing assesses the compatibility of the applicants and also assists in determining potential subsidies and sources of funds. The disabilities can fall within a broad range as long as the individual can manage with the level of staffing the program provides. Generally a condominium unit consists of a private bedroom (sometimes with a private bath) and an undivided share of generous, well-appointed common areas—living rooms, kitchen, dining room, recreation area, staff apartments, laundries, etc. The residents learn to be homeowners and become part of a profoundly supportive community, forming deep friendships and helping each other. We can arrange for you to tour existing households. |
